Simon and Garfunkel, “Silent Night/ Seven o’clock news”

A somewhat ambivalent song. Is it an ironic comment on man's inhumanity to man and the futility of our attempts to find comfort, or is it about the presence of hope even in the most awful situations?

I don't know how it was intended, but for me it's the latter, and I think any Christian who takes the Incarnation seriously will read it that way, despite the fact that S & G are not Christians. Yes, that's the world the story tells us God was born into, but... it's the world we believe God was born into.

I tend to read it as a call to remember that the Nativity has a political element - that it is not about cosy happy families in their idyllic little middle-class homes, but that those of us who believe God was born into this world have to do our bit to make that claim plausible to those who can't see it for all the suffering.
